Overview: In January 2001, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals (GSK Bio) and the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI)—with grant monies from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to MVI—began a public-private partnership to develop the RTS,S vaccine candidate for use in infants and young children in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2009, an expanded collaboration involving scientists at 11 sites in seven African countries took RTS,S into a large-scale Phase 3 trial, typically one of the last steps before regulatory approval. If all goes well, general implementation of RTS,S for infants 6 to 12 weeks of age is possible within five years or so.
