Overview: Global health research is a priority program area for the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH). The FNIH has been a partner in the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative since 2003. The current FNIH grant portfolio emphasizes two important public health challenges in the developing world: infectious diseases and malnutrition. However, the foundation maintains an active and relevant global health program with capacity to move into other areas of international research. A team of scientists and project/grant managers oversee a cumulative $290 million research portfolio encompassing partnerships with philanthropies, the National Institutes of Health, academia, and industry.
