Overview: In 2008, Children's Tumor Foundation established the Neurofibromatosis Preclinical Consortium (NFPC) for comprehensive preclinical drug testing to find treatments for the multiple brain and nerve tumor types of neurofibromatosis (NF), a rare disorder affecting 100,000 Americans. NF tumors can be debilitating and malignant, and there is no approved therapy. A broad understanding of candidate NF drug targets, many common to cancer, has provided an opportunity for industry drug pipeline repurposing/assessment in NF. NFPC has to date established collaborations with Novartis, Genentech, Avila Therapeutics, and others. A preclinical pipeline is established, and two drugs have already advanced to clinical trials.
