Overview: Multiple myeloma is a heterogeneous disease with inter- and intra-patient variability. To develop truly personalized treatments, it is critical to understand the disease at the molecular level. In early 2010, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) developed a strategic plan for a Personalized Medicine Initiative. The goal is to accelerate the development of diagnostics and tailored therapies, employing the following strategies:

1) mobilize the myeloma community to understand, develop, and adopt individualized treatment approaches;
2) develop approaches to stratify patients for subsequent clinical validation; and
3) accelerate the development and application of tailored therapies to optimize outcomes.
