Session 1: Medical Research to Care: Closing the Learning Loop Back to the Agenda |
Tuesday, December 14, 2010 9:30 am - 10:25 am
We've long spoken about taking new therapies from the bench to the bedside, but now it is time to bring the bedside back to the bench in a true "learning healthcare system." The Institute of Medicine defines such a system as one that "[applies] evidence in health care decision making," and "gets the right care to people when they need it and then captures the results for improvement." But how big should the learning loop be? How can post-market evidence be fed back into the research process? Are there innovations in clinical trial design and conduct, new models for rapid learning, that will cut the time and cost of research? Will an increased focus on comparative effectiveness research help or hinder the development of new treatments? |
