Everyone involved in medical research wants to do the right thing for patients. But the needs of enormous numbers of patients – suffering from both rare diseases and common ones like Alzheimer’s and lung cancer – remain unmet. How does industry view its scientific and business priorities over the coming decade? Are appropriate incentives in place to encourage industry to take the risks involved in developing treatments for small patient populations or in novel areas of science? Are companies open to new ways of doing business, to new collaborations and partnerships, in order to address those risks? And what happens as medicine becomes more personalized, focused on the needs of an individual patient?
