These consultations will address the strategic acquisition and allocation of philanthropic capital. Consultants will come from both the foundation and investor perspectives, and will provide guidance on issues such as attracting investors, understanding/evaluating philanthropic investment objectives, building a high-impact medical portfolio, resource-building, etc.
Eric Kessler - Founder, Principal, and Managing Director, Arabella Philanthropic Investment Advisors
As founder and managing director of Arabella Advisors, Eric Kessler has built a social venture firm dedicated to making philanthropy more effective. His client work at Arabella includes philanthropy strategy, evaluation, foundation management, and project execution. Kessler has spearheaded evaluations of many of the world's more significant nonprofits and served as executive director of numerous foundations through Arabella Foundation Management. In addition to founding Arabella, Kessler also founded and serves as president of the New Venture Fund, an innovative, independent 501(c)(3) organization that houses donor collaborative, serves as a global grantmaking intermediary, and provides fiscal sponsorship to new project ideas inspired by philanthropists and foundations. He also founded and helps to lead both Creation Care Fund and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. Kessler is passionate about maximizing the impact of philanthropy, whether for families or individuals, institutions, or corporations – believing that effective philanthropy begins with a clear vision and a focused plan for making that vision a reality.


Melanie Schnoll Begun - Mananaging Director and Head of Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management's Philanthropic Services
Melanie Schnoll Begun is a managing director and head of Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management's Philanthropic Services. Schnoll Begun has served as a philanthropic counselor to families, foundations, and family offices for more than 18 years. She works with the firm's ultra-high-net-worth clients to develop areas of focus for their philanthropy; engage multiple generations in their foundation's governance, programming, and evaluation; help clients to design customized domestic and international grantmaking portfolios and gift agreements; facilitate giving circles and retreats; and coordinate with clients' tax and legal professionals on the formation of tax-exempt nonprofit organizations as well as their dissolution or merger. Schnoll Begun is the vice president of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney's Global Impact Funding Trust, Inc. and is the incoming board president of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of New York and the board treasurer of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning. She is also on the advisory boards of Girls, Inc., the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center, and Grameen America, a nonprofit microfinance organization whose mission is to help entrepreneurial individuals, especially women, build credit and defeat poverty. She has published and appeared in many articles in trade journals and the mainstream media.
