Crossing the Valley of Death: The Translational Funding and Management Gap

Robi Blumenstein, President, CHDI Management/CHDI Foundation
Translational research is the critical bridge between basic research and clinical research – the process of applying ideas, insights, and discoveries generated through basic scientific inquiry to the treatment and prevention of human disease. Unfortunately, much promising research falls into a "valley of death" of funding and management, between basic discovery - largely funded by the government - and later-stage clinical research - usually funded by industry. What can be done to bridge this gap and rescue good ideas? How can we draw those standing on each side of the Valley closer together?
